2024-2025 the tragic reality of late-term born-alive abortions

2024/2025 late-term abortion stats released from CIHI. Late-term stillbirth abortions are up (1,219, last year was 1,192). Late-term born-alive abortions are down (129, last year was 150).

Also notice that live-birth abortions for 25-28 weeks gestation are up (14) from last year (5). Both years had six born alive babies 29+ weeks gestation. These are all babies that could actually survive the abortion if someone had cared enough to not let them die after they were born.

For comparison purposes 2023/2024 here.

Whichever way you look at the data, one of these horrific late-term abortions is one too many.

Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights freaks out over Canada's late-term abortion reality

On November 25, 2025 the pro-abortion Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights (who got all antsy pantsy with Right Now's recent expose on late-term abortion in Canada) lobbied ten MPs and government officials.

Notice they even lobbied a student. How pathetic is that?

Here is that list of those people who they lobbied:

  • Elizabeth Gichimu, Director of Operations, Office of MP Greaves | House of Commons
  • Eloise Kingdon, Student, Office of MP Greaves | House of Commons
  • Peggy Ainslie, Executive Director, SRH Fund | Health Canada (HC)
  • Francois Rivest, Manager of Partnerships and Projects | Health Canada (HC)
  • Carina Gabriele, Director of Policy | Women and Gender Equality (WAGE)
  • Anita Vandenbeld, Member of Parliament | House of Commons
  • Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, Member of Parliament | House of Commons
  • Juanita Nathan, Member of Parliament | House of Commons
  • Marie-Gabrielle Menard , Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism) (Parliamentary Secretary) | Women and Gender Equality (WAGE)
  • Mackenzy Metcalfe, Policy Advisor, Office of the Minister of Finance | Finance Canada (FIN)
  • Carina Gabriele, Director of Policy | Women and Gender Equality (WAGE)

I guess they thought they needed to get out there to try and counter the recent devastating story of Canada's late-term abortion reality thanks to Right Now.

Right Now goes undercover to expose Canada's late-term abortion industry

For anyone thinking that late term abortions are not happening in Canada, think again. Right Now has gone undercover to expose the lies told by the pro-abortions. This eight minute video uncovers the truth.

Total 2023-2024 late-term born alive and stillbirth abortion numbers are up

Born alive and stillbirth late term abortions for 2023/2024. Totals for late-term born alive/stillbirth abortions combined, are more than the total for the previous year by 125. Comparison of the last five years below.

That is 642 late-term born alive abortions in just five years.

That is 5,738 late-term stillbirth abortions in just five years.

These numbers are most probably grossly underreported because CIHI only publishes numbers from nine provinces and the three territories. Noticeably absent is Quebec's numbers. I've asked CIHI why this is the case, and am waiting for a response.

'In Quebec, induced abortions during the second trimester of pregnancy result in a live birth more than one in ten times (11.2%). Of these live-born fetuses, one in ten survives more than 3 hours. These are the findings of a study published in June 2024 in the scientific journal American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (AJOG).
The study was based on all second trimester abortions (13,777) performed in the hospitals of Quebec between 1989 and 2021. In Quebec, the law does not stipulate a maximum time limit for performing an abortion. The researchers found that abortions performed during the second trimester of pregnancy due to fetal anomalies doubled between the period 1989 - 2000 and 2011-2021. At the same time, they observed a significant increase in live births following a second-trimester abortion: the rate of 4.1 live births per 100 abortions in 1989-2001 climbs to 20.8% for the 2011-2021 period.

This is particularly true for abortions between 20 and 24 weeks of amenorrhea (18-22 weeks of pregnancy): in this case, more than one fetus in five is alive at the time of expulsion (21.7%).'

The pro-abortions always like to say that these late-term abortions are always done because of fetal anomalies or the health of the mother. But in 48% of these cases, the Quebec abortions took place for "personal or unspecified reasons" on a healthy fetus:

'The study showed that in 48% of second trimester abortions in Quebec, i.e. almost half the cases, there was no medical indication on the fetal side, nor any medical emergency on the maternal side. In these cases, the abortion took place for “personal or unspecified” reasons, on a healthy fetus.'

So many lies.

Quebec has more late-term born-alive abortions than the rest of Canada

Andrea Mrozek writes about the recent study out of Quebec on born-alive abortions.

'The kicker for Canadians is that the study sample was 13,777 abortions done between 1989 and 2021 in Quebec. This means that over 32 years, about 430 abortions resulted in live births every single year in that province.'

These late term abortions also happen every year, in every other province in Canada. I have been collecting this data for many years from CIHI, but CIHI never reports on Quebec data. Now we know that there is an average of 430 of these late-term abortions in Quebec every year. This is a staggering number. It is also way higher than the number of late-term born-alive abortions in the rest of Canada (there were 131 in the rest of Canada in 2022/2023).

Only 5.5% of these born alive abortions received palliative care.

'In analyses of live births, one-quarter of neonates (24.5%) were admitted to an intensive care unit and 5.5% received palliative care.'

Abort late-term baby. Abortion fails. Baby is born-alive. Don't give it palliative care. This is just plain evil.

1,190 late term abortions in Canada for 2022/2023 (excluding Quebec)

Note: All the numbers reported exclude late-term abortions performed in Quebec.

Live birth late-term abortion numbers are down to 131 in 2022/2023 from 149 in 2021/2022 (18 less). That is the good news. The bad news is that late-term stillbirth abortions are up from 911 in 2021/2022 to 1,059 in 2022/2023 (148 more). And the worse news is, that these horrific abortions still happen at all.

That's a net 130 more late term abortions in 2022/2023 than in 2021/222.

All of these dead children are >= 20 weeks gestation.

Seven of these children born alive after an abortion were 29+ weeks gestation. Nine of them were 25-28 weeks gestation when they died. 98 of them were 21-24 weeks gestation when they died.

If someone had bothered to care for these children after their failed abortion, they could/would still be alive today.

Canada does late-term abortions - don't let the pro-aborts tell you it doesn't happen

The lie:

"No providers in Canada offer abortion care beyond 23 weeks and 6 days. When they are beyond 23 weeks and 6 days, many Canadians end up having to travel to the United States to access services with little guidance or support from their governments."

Regarding the grim case of a recent 38 week old fetus being aborted in particular, I received this question from someone:

"I was led to believe in the past that 3rd trimester abortions for Canadian Women were actually done in the US as their weren’t doctors to do them in Canada. Is that correct? Also was this one done in Montreal a first in Canada? Really having a hard time getting my head around this."

The short answer is:

  • Canada does send women to the US for abortions
  • the very late term abortion in Montreal was not a first for Canada
  • every year there are many late-term abortions done in Canada
  • and please note that all these abortions detailed below result in a live child who is left to die, they also just happen to be late-term abortions

The problem is that the pro-aborts would have us believe that these horrific abortions are rare. They are not.

Below is what we know for sure, but as always, there is a lot of data missing from this. All this information below comes from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). So please don't shoot the messenger.

NOTE: There are also stillborn abortions listed in the links below. Because gestational ages are not provided for stillborn abortions, I am not including them in my calculations below, except to identify their numbers. All of these stillborn abortions reported by CIHI are > 20 weeks gestation. Therefore, there would definitely be late-term abortions in these numbers, we just don't know how many.

Born alive abortions

NOTE this from CIHI:

"in accordance with CIHI’s privacy policy, cells with counts of 1 to 4 are suppressed. These are represented by N/R (Not reportable) in the table. Suppressed cells are excluded from the totals."

What this means is, that when you see a cell containing N/R, there are 1 to 4 of these abortions for that gestational age.

In 2020/2021 there were 8 born alive abortions 29 + weeks, and 8 between 25 and 28 weeks.

There were also 935 stillborn abortions done this year, all > 20 weeks gestation. Some of these would be late-term abortions.

In 2019/2020 there were 10 born alive abortions performed 25-28 week gestation, and 1-4, 29 + weeks

There were also 999 stillborn abortions done this year, all > 20 weeks gestation. Some of these would be late-term abortions.

In 2018-2019 there were 5 born alive abortions done 29 + weeks, and 15 done 25 -28 weeks

There were also 902 stillborn abortions done this year, all > 20 weeks gestation. Some of these would be late-term abortions.

In 2013-2018 there were 8 plus an unknown number of born alive abortions done of 29 + weeks, and there were 27 done 25 - 28 weeks.

There were also 4,282 stillborn abortions done this year, all > 20 weeks gestation. Some of these would be late-term abortions.

More on late term, live birth abortions

When I reported 2017/2018 abortion statistics for Ontario, there were 15 abortions called S770A CORPUS UTERI - HYSTEROTOMY and S783A CORPUS UTERI - HYSTEROTOMY WITH TUBAL INTERRUPTION.

Here is the gruesome definition of these abortions taken from the SOGC Clinical Practice guidelines:
"Hysterotomy is essentially an early classical Caesarean section. With current pharmacologic agents for labour induction in pregnancy termination, the procedure is rarely indicated as a primary method of abortion. The morbidity and mortality associated with hysterotomy are far greater than for any other technique. In most cases, failed abortions are managed with parenteral, oral, vaginal, or rectal prostaglandins even in the presence of a uterine anomoly. Only after failure of the prostaglandins should hysterotomy be performed."
And from Thomas W. Hilgers, M.D., Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Creighton University, in testimony before the U.S. Senate Constitution Subcommittee, Oct. 14, 1981.
"Hysterotomy is an operation like a Caesarean section in which the infant is surgically removed from the mother’s abdomen and uterus. With the hysterotomy type of abortion there is no chemical that is inducing fetal death. When the surgeon [cuts open] the uterus the baby is still alive."

Late-term stillbirth (902) and livebirth (150) abortions in 2018/2019

Live birth abortions continue to happen in Canada.

Here are the latest numbers of late term abortions in Canada from CIHI. There were 910 late-term (20 weeks and greater) stillbirths and 150 born alive abortions.

Previous years here.

20 of these born alive abortions were greater than 25 weeks gestation.
107 of these born alive abortions were between 21 – 24 weeks gestation.
23 of these born alive abortions were 20 weeks gestation.

Note: These are for hospital abortions only and do not include clinics or physician's offices. These numbers also do not include late-term abortions done in Quebec.

Quebec abortions at least 20% higher than reported by CIHI

I have good news and I have bad news.

The good news is that Quebec's abortion rates appear to be decreasing. The bad news is that what CIHI reports for Quebec abortions is under reported by at least 20%.

I did a freedom of information request of Quebec Health RAMQ. This is what I asked for:
1. The number of abortions done in a Canadian province, other than Quebec, reimbursed by RAMQ, as well as the total cost, for each of the last five years, broken down by hospital, by clinic, and by physician's office.
2. The number abortions done in Quebec, reimbursed by RAMQ, as well as the total cost, for each of the last five years, broken down by hospital, by clinic, and by physician's office.
3. The number abortions done in the United States, reimbursed by RAMQ, as well as the total cost, for each of the last five years.
Below are scans of what I received back. Sorry for the poor quality.

The first three scans are the numbers of abortions done in Quebec, and the last scan is of the abortions done in a province outside of Quebec.

Ignoring the 2019 stats (the year isn't finished yet) and the 2014 stats (doesn't seem to be online anymore at CIHI's site), I looked at 2015, 2016 and 2017 and compared them to CIHI's numbers.

Here they are (and for this calculation I ignored the out of province abortions so the actual abortions are even higher than this):

2015 RAMQ/CIHI 29,036/24,193 (difference of 4,843)
2016 RAMQ/CIHI 28,086/23,393 (difference of 4,693)
2017 RAMQ/CIHI 27,621/22,966 (difference of 4,655)

For the abortions done out of province, I noticed something interesting. For those done under "Services professionels" (380 of them), the average cost was about $308. For those done under "Services hospitaliers" the average cost was about $1,580. It seems probable that these are late-term abortions because of the much higher cost.

Regarding abortions done if the US, I was told:
"Furthermore, we wish to inform you that we have not reimbursed any abortion performed in the US." [sic]

Who is lying - Kelowna Right to Life billboard or someone else?

Joyce Arthur has some problems with this billboard and she wants people to complain to Ad Standards. She thinks the following statements are all false. They are not.

My comments in bold on each of her statements.

implying that abortion is available until the 9th month of pregnancy
(Abortion is legal in Canada up until 9 months of pregnancy)

implying that full-term foetuses are routinely aborted
(From 2013/2014 to 2017/2018 there were 5,048 late-term abortions in Canada. These late term abortions were all at least > 500 grams or 20 weeks gestation
2014-2015 Livebirth abortions: there were 14 abortions from (25 +) weeks gestation
2015-2016 Livebirth abortions: there were 6 abortions from (29 +) weeks gestation / unknown gestation
2016-2017 Livebirth abortions: there were 8 abortions from (25 +) weeks gestation
2017-2018 Livebirth abortions: there were 5 abortions from (29 +) weeks gestation / unknown gestation)

claiming that Canadian law allows abortion up to 9 months
(There were a Total of 33 Livebirth abortons of (25+ weeks gestation) / unknown gestational age in a five year period)

implying that most abortions happen around 16 weeks or later
(At least 5,048 later than 20 weeks, unknown how many were between 16 and 20 weeks)

calling a foetus a “child” or a “person”
(A fetus is a very young human child)

making unsupported statements, e.g. “up to 25% of your friends, neighbours and relatives are likely missing” due to abortion
(in Canada in 2018 there were 385,777 live births. There are about 100,000 abortions in Canada each year. Looks to me like approximately 25% of pregnancies ended in abortion)

using the word “committed” rather than “performed”, to imply that abortion is illegal
(to commit: carry out or perpetrate (a mistake, crime, or immoral act).

equating legal abortion with extreme child abuse
(abortion is extremely abusive towards the pre-born child)

characterizing abortion as a procedure to be “performed at the patient’s request without a referral”
(no referral is required in Canada for abortion)

implying that most abortions occur later in pregnancy by showing images of later-term fetuses
(5,048 is a lot of late term abortions)

implying that fetuses at all stages of gestation will feel pain in an abortion
(one fetus feeling pain from an abortion is one too much)

claiming that "Canada has no abortion laws" when the 1988 R.v. Morgentaler decision that legalized abortion in fact stands as law as decreed by the Supreme Court, and abortion is regulated in other ways (such as through the Canada Health Act)
(there are no laws in Canada that provide any protection to the pre-born child)

Canada: why did 766 late-term livebirth abortions happen?

This is extremely depressing.

According to new data, livebirth late-term abortions are still happening in Canada. And the numbers are way too high.

According to CIHI, There were 766 late-term livebirth abortions in a five year period from 2013/2014 to 2017/2018. These numbers are even higher since they exclude Quebec.

There has been much speculation about the reasons for these late-term livebirth abortions (P96.4 Termination of pregnancy) but we have no hard data on why they happen since the reasons or circumstances aren't published with the data.

A study was done in Quebec in 2016. That study:
"found the number of infants who were born alive and died after an abortion jumped from one per 100,000 in 1986-1999, to 19.4 per 100,000 between 2000 and 2012. Those accidental live births totalled 218 babies."
The study's author asked these sobering questions:
“How are such infants cared for?” they ask in the journal Neonatology. “If not resuscitated, is palliative care provided? Are the infants admitted to neonatal units or do they die in the delivery room?”
All information regarding the reasons they happen, and what happens to the child after they are born alive, is anecdotal.

But they do happen. This we know for a fact and we know the numbers: 766 late-term livebirth abortions in a five years period.

(Note: below is all my data on this. 2017-2018, as well as data from 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 is new)

More than 1,000 late term abortions in 2017-2018

Below is the latest data from CIHI (2017/2018) on Canada's late term abortions.

(Update: I forgot to put the word "livebirth" in the four following statistics.)

There were 8 livebirth abortions done in Canada with a gestational age of 25-28 weeks.

There were 102 livebirth abortions done in Canada with a gestational age 21-24 weeks gestation.

There were 31 livebirth abortions done in Canada with a gestational age of 17-20 weeks gestation.

There were 5 livebirth abortions done in Canada with a gestational age of unknown gestational age and/or > 29 weeks gestation.

Totals:
  • 910 late-term abortions in Canada resulting in a stillbirth.
  • 146 late-term abortions in Canada resulting in a livebirth.
Last year's numbers.

All of these 1,056 were late-term abortions (20 weeks or greater gestation).

These numbers do not include late-term abortions from Quebec, so this number could be and probably is higher.

Definitions from CIHI:

Stillbirths from Termination of Pregnancy:
"P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus or newborn"
Newborns from Termination of Pregnancy:
"P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn"
Stillborn Abstracting:
"A stillborn is any intrauterine fetal demise or termination of pregnancy occurring at or after 20 completed weeks of gestation in which the fetus shows no signs of life. A liveborn resulting from a medical abortion prior to 20 weeks is considered pre-viable for the purposes of classification and an abstract is not created."

2016/2017 - 152 livebirth abortions in Canada in one year

In 2016/2017 there were 901 late-term abortions in Canada resulting in a stillbirth.

There were 152 late-term abortions in Canada resulting in a livebirth.

All of these 1,053 were late-term abortions (20 weeks or greater gestation).

You can read the full report from CIHI here.

Last time I blogged about livebirth abortions was for 2013/2014.

We still don't know number of late-term abortions in Canada

By Patricia Maloney

Pro-abortion activist Joyce Arthur thinks that only 0.59 percent of all abortions performed in Canada for 2015 are late-term.

There is no way Arthur can know this, since very few late-term abortions are reported to CIHI. All we know for sure is, that based on the 19,039 hospital abortions for which we have a gestational age, there were 587 late-term hospital abortions in Canada in 2015. (an excel spreadsheet will be downloaded to your computer, see Table 4)

I've discussed this a few times before, links here.

So let's do it again for 2015.

CIHI reported 100,104 abortions in 2015. Of these 100,104 abortions, the gestational age is only reported for 19,039 of the abortions (7,330 performed on fetuses <=8 weeks, 8,701 on fetuses 9-12 weeks, 1,585 on fetuses 13-16 weeks, 836 on fetuses 17-20 weeks, 587 on fetuses 21+ weeks). Note that these known gestational age abortions are reported only for hospital abortions--we have no gestational ages for abortions done in clinics or physician's offices. And 4,522 of these hospital abortions have an unknown gestational age.

Therefore, there were at least 81,065 (100,104 minus 19,039) abortions performed in 2015 with an unknown gestational age. This means all of those 81,065 abortions, or most of them, or some of them, or none of them, could be late term abortions--we do not know. And we don’t know these gestational ages because most abortion providers don't report the gestational ages of abortions.

In other words of the 100,104 known abortions we only know gestational ages for 19,039 of them.

If all of the unknown gestational age abortions were in fact late term abortions, then the percentage  of late term abortions could be as high as 81%. But we don't know do we? To say that only .59% of abortions are late-term is unknowable. It is also misleading.

Even if the rate of late-term abortions was linear, then that would mean that there could be 3,103 late-term abortions and not 587 (587 is 3.1% of 19,039, therefore 3.1% of 100,104 is 3,103).

And as Suzanne Fortin wisely noted regarding the possible rarity of late term abortions:
"So what if they're [late-term abortions] rare? They HAPPEN! Murder is rare too. One is too many."

How science will blow the abortion debate wide open

Good article in Saturday's National Post.

"When it comes to debating the rights of the unborn, history may show our current quiet phase to have been the calm before the storm: the transition period when science, not ideology, became the driving force for a bill of rights for the fetus.
One factor driving the change: advancements in neonatal medicine are pushing the envelope of fetal viability well beyond what anyone ever imagined.
In May 2015, Time magazine responded to a study by the New England Journal of Medicine on premature infants by asking the question that’s on many people’s minds: “How low can preemies go?” The landmark study pointed to fetal viability at 22 weeks, versus the currently accepted 24 weeks. According to Time, this raised new ethical dilemmas about “how much care is too much — and how much is suddenly not enough” and, by extension, “how an even slightly lower age of viability affects the fraught debate over abortion.”
In particular, the study calls into question the controversial practice of late-term abortions, performed after the 20th week of gestation. According to partial data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information, in 2014 there were 605 abortions performed at 21-plus weeks. In the decade to come, as saving the lives of premature infants in that grey zone of viability becomes commonplace, it will make the dividing line between the wanted and the unwanted so much more intolerable, especially for the many Canadians who self-identify as “reluctantly pro-choice.”
Neonatology isn’t the only stream of medicine that will eventually force the government’s hand in establishing the rights of the unborn — fetal medicine is making equally course-altering strides. After a $54.5-million gift to its Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, the University of Alberta recently joined other hospitals and universities worldwide who will, in the decades to come, establish a new normal in fetal care, including life-saving surgeries and diagnostics that can be performed in utero as early as 13 weeks.
These scientific leaps won’t just expand our notion of duty of care for the fetus, they will blow it wide open.
Will a woman’s autonomy still be the deciding factor on issues of life and death?..."
After being in Toronto this past weekend where everything was Pride Pride Pride Pride...I thought this comment below about the article from a Del James Cornell University, was particularly timely:
"It would great to see strong, rational voices in the general population advocating for rights of the unborn with the same vigor we have seen people advocating for LGBT rights. Human rights are rights for all humans and science continually demonstrates that a fetus is a human being unto itself."

Sticking to the facts and evidence on abortion statistics

I learned this week that Fake Person supports our Charter challenge with this tweet.

Makes sense, because we know officially reported abortion statistics in Canada aren't very useful. They are grossly under-reported (by at least 45% in Ontario alone). They aren't based on medical billings, but rather, on hospital records. So all abortions performed in doctor's offices are not reported, and it's not mandatory for clinics to report them, so many don't. Hence their inaccuracy.

So it's very important to be able to get accurate abortion information, hence our Charter challenge.

I write a great deal on this topic. I have published statistics based on doctor's billing records, information I have received from CIHI, from Stats Canada, etc. I'd say my track record for abortion statistics is pretty sound.

But this is what I don't understand. In this blog entry which was linked from her tweet above, Fake Person makes fun of me, and pro-lifers in general, using our charter challenge as a kick off point to launch into one of her typical ridiculing spree of us.

What is the point of that? If she agrees with what we are doing, what is the need to make fun of us?

Then she says this:
As a fan of facts and evidence, DJ! generally supports the release of information, provided the safety of patients and providers is guaranteed.
So she's a fan of "facts and evidence", but is worried about the safety of patients and providers? Since I never ask for private information, she can rest assured that this isn't the case. And that fact has been published numerous times by me, and by others.

Then she ends her piece by linking to Joyce Arthur's abortion stats, which are a compilation of CIHI's (self acknowledged) inaccurate stats.

I notice that in her chart, Arthur publishes a chart showing the gestational age of abortions from CIHI for years 2007 to 2013.

These numbers are for abortions done after 21 weeks, and range from 537 to 564 a year. What Arthur doesn't tell you, is that these numbers are based on only a small subset of all abortions, for which the gestational ages are known.

Arthur frequently concludes, that late term therefore are only performed in "exceptional circumstances" and are "extremely rare". But as I've shown on at least three occasions before, her "facts and evidence" on late-term abortions are wanting. As I detailed in the following posts below, there is no way Arthur can know if abortions are performed only in "exceptional circumstances" and are "extremely rare".

The actual late-term abortion numbers could very well be a lot higher.

Sticking to the "facts and evidence" is a good thing. I intend to keep doing that.

Repeating untruths doesn't make them true

Frankly, this is tiring: Joyce Arthur working reality into a fictional story on abortion in Canada. Does she ever give it a rest? Apparently not.

I've already debunked her make-believe world here when I wrote on January 12, 2012 about 2009 Canadian abortion statistics, and here when I wrote on November 19, 2012 about 2010 Canadian abortion statistics.

So here we go again--now I'll do it for 2012 abortion statistics.

1) Arthur says:
"Since 1988, when the Supreme Court of Canada threw out our abortion law as unconstitutional, the sky has not fallen, but our abortion rates have – we’ve witnessed a continuing decline since 2000 and now have a relatively low abortion rate compared to many other developed countries – about 14 abortions per 1000 women of childbearing age per year." (emphasis added)
Arthur points to CIHI as proof that Canada's abortions statistics have been declining since 2000. But how does she know this? She doesn't. Because as CIHI themselves tell us their numbers are underestimated:
"...while this is probably an underestimate of induced abortions done in the country, it is currently the best way to produce pan-Canadian comparable data."
That's because CIHI's numbers don't record abortions done in private physician's offices; don't record medical abortions; and don't record all clinic abortions, because many clinics choose not to report that information, and nobody makes them do it.

Arthur then says there are 14 abortions per 1000, but neglects to tell you, that that number is from Statistics Canada data from 2005--nine years ago. We have no idea right now how many abortions are committed per 1000 abortions, because our data is inaccurate. And even if it was accurate, you can't use nine year old data to talk about today's trends.

(In fact, discerning minds must question why CIHI reports at all--if their numbers are so woefully inaccurate? But that's a question for another day.)

2) Arthur says
"90 per cent of abortions occur during the first trimester, and less than half a percent after 20 weeks." (emphasis added)
For 2012, CIHI reported a total of 83,708 clinic and hospital abortions (and as stated above this is under reported). Of these abortions, a full 62,178* have "unknown" gestational age.

That means all 62,178*, or most of them, or some of them, or none of them, could be late term abortions. We. Do. Not. Know. That's what "unknown" means. And we don’t know these gestational ages because most abortion providers don't report them.

So concluding late-term abortions are "less than half a percent" is impossible.

3) Arthur says:
"The latter [after 20 weeks] are all for compelling reasons, such as fetal abnormalities incompatible with life or a serious threat to the woman’s health or life."
How does Arthur know these late-term abortions are for compelling reasons? Because nobody else in Canada knows this. Arthur can't know--since reasons are not reported.

We know for sure that in 2012 there were 563 late term hospital abortions (as reported by CIHI). And remember, we don't know how many late term abortions were done in clinics because clinics don't report late-term abortions. And since we don't know the gestational ages of 62,178* abortions, Arthur's conclusions are based on bad, wrong, missing, and or inaccurate information.

Even if Arthur can prove there are "only" 563 late abortions per year, are we supposed to take comfort in the fact that in relative terms there are so many fewer late term abortions than early abortions? That just means we have many, many, many, many, many, many early abortions.

4) Then Joyce gets creative, by actually redefining the medical term "fetal viability":
"Much of the debate in the UK media has focused on the science of fetal viability and at what gestation they can survive on their own. This issue is totally irrelevant to women who need abortion care, as the survival ability of premature babies applies only to fetuses being carried to term. If a woman needs an abortion, then by definition, her fetus is not viable." (emphasis added)
In other words, if you don't like the definition of something, hey just change its meaning. That was easy.

5) Finally we get to the bottom of Arthur's real worry. That darned fetus. Always gets in the way of a good abortion fairy tale.

To solve this thorny issue of decapitating, dismembering and disemboweling another human being, we simply advise the reader to NOT focus on the fetus.
"When we focus on the fetus, we forget about the woman and her reasons for an abortion. Women don’t ask for an abortion because it’s their ‘right to choose,’ or because they don’t understand what’s inside of them. They request abortion because they can’t provide responsibly for a child (or another child) at this point in their lives. A woman’s abortion decision is about ensuring her future and that of her family, not about the current legal or moral status of her fetus. It’s about being the best mother possible when she’s ready – or maybe not becoming a mother at all if she knows she’s not suited to it. That is the very definition of conscientious decision-making. We can trust women to know what’s best for themselves and their families, without imposing punitive criminal laws against their private decisions."
So many problems dissipate when we make up numbers, change definitions, and ignore the fetus. It's easy, really. Just ask Joyce.

(* 62,178 unknown gestational age abortions is calculated using simple arithmetic: 83,708 total known abortions - 21,530 known gestational age abortions (see page 6 of CIHI's 2012 statistics) = unknown gestational age abortions)

The murderer was only an abortion doctor

From Ezra Levant in the Toronto Sun.
"...Why were the benches in the courtroom, set aside for media, nearly empty, week after week?
The answer is obvious: Because the murderer was an abortion doctor, in an abortion clinic, committing hundreds of late-term, partial-birth abortions and full-birth murders, usually of minorities, usually paid for by taxpayers.
That sort of horror story would sell. Too well. Because it would undermine the official narrative that abortions can't be criticized, that late-term abortions are a myth, that it's all safe and sound and medically approved and happy. That happy left-wing pro-abortion narrative would be damaged by reports of a multimillionaire abortionist, getting rich off murder, operating in the system for decades.
So, the story itself was aborted.
Enter filmmakers Phelim McAleer, Ann McElhinney and Magda Segieda. They have decided to do what Big Hollywood won't: To make a true crime TV movie about Kermit Gosnell.
They're raising $2.1 million, not from Hollywood studios, but online. They're crowd-funding it, in thousands of little contributions from ordinary Americans and Canadians.
Do you think this movie should be made? If so, you can help make it. Go to www.GosnellMovie.com. It's a story that must be told."

2010 and 2011 late term abortion statistics - born alive

Statistics Canada has published two more years of the late term born alive abortion statistics for 2010 and 2011.

For these two years, there were 131 abortions, of 20 weeks gestation and greater, that resulted in live births. This means that the aborted child died after it was born. These abortions are coded as P96.4 or "Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn".

This number does not include late term abortions that are born dead (stillbirths).

See my last post on this to calculate the figures.

Here is a screen shot of the numbers and the footnotes:
