40 Days for Life off to a good start

This morning Jackie, Maureen and I witnessed and prayed at the abortion site at 7:00 AM. We joined parishioners from Assumption Parish. Joan was happy for us to join her parish as that meant there were seven of us for the opening vigil time on Bank and Sparks Street. Assumption parishioners will be there the whole day praying and witnessing. God Bless them all.

It's kind of ironic. Because of the nonsensical Safe Access to Abortion Services Act, we have to stand on the corner of Bank and Sparks behind their ridiculous sign (see picture below). But the good news is that our witnessing covers four corners of the street and lots and lots of people can see us. We are probably more visible to more people than when we used to witness in front of 65 Bank St. Good comes out of not good. God is in control.

Mark Carney needs to fix removing God from prayer

Dear Mark Carney,

Please find attached, a statement by Bishop Scott McCaig, C.C. Military Ordinary of Canada regarding the new policy that states:

“In military settings, spiritual reflections are inclusive public addresses to a group of individuals that nurture resilience by fostering meaning, purpose, and spiritual well-being,” Furthermore, “Spiritual reflections do not use religious specific language, including references to God, etc.” 

This is an unconscionable decision. You are a practicing Catholic I understand. This has happened under your watch. You need to fix it. And please do not pass my concerns off to one of your ministers like you did the last time I wrote to you. The buck stops with you. You have the power to correct this situation and you must do so. You serve the people of Canada.

To arbitrarily change the role of the Military Ordinariate of Canada to remove God and prayer--a role that has existed as an official canonical jurisdiction for 75 years, tracing its roots back to a military vicariate established in 1951; then in1939: Catholic military bishops first began serving the Canadian Army during the Second World War; then in February 17, 1951, formally erected as the Military Vicariate of Canada by Pope Pius XII July 21; in 1986: Elevated and promoted to the status of a full Military Ordinariate by the Vatican--is simply a terrible decision.

As a Catholic and a Canadian, I am ashamed that this is happening. It is an insult to God whose power far exceeds your own.

I hope you decide to do the right thing and reverse this decision as soon as possible.

But, deliver us from evil

I was praying the Our Father this morning. When I recited the last line, I stopped. It hit me.

I remembered the blog post I had done yesterday. About the late-term abortions that are done for Quebec women who go to the US. And that frightful fact of aborting a child up to 36 weeks gestation.

Our Father, Who art in heaven.

How do they do it? How do they kill a child who is fully formed, who can breathe on its own, and knows it's mother's voice? How can they do it?

Hallowed be Thy Name. 

I write about abortion. All the time. About the number of abortions that are done in Canada. I write about this a lot. 

Thy Kingdom come. 

I write about the money that goes to pay for abortion. I write about the doctors who commit these abortions. I write about the millions we give to our own Canadians to promote, celebrate and push abortion. All in the name of "choice".

Thy Will be done, 

I write about the millions and millions we export to third world countries like Africa, so they too can have abortions.

on earth as it is in Heaven.

I write about our Godless politicians who promote abortion; who close their eyes to it; who spend our taxes on it.

Give us this day our daily bread.

It's one thing to close your eyes to the evil of abortion; it is quite another thing to promote it; to celebrate it; to pay for it; to export it.

And forgive us our trespasses, 

Do they know what they are doing? It's hard to comprehend that they do not. 

as we forgive those who trespass against us. 

Do these people ever pray? Do they ever think about God? Do they ever think about the child who might have been?

But, deliver us from evil. Amen.

Do not be troubled nor disturbed by anything

Yesterday Maureen and I visited Fr. Tony at the abortion killing site. As usual Fr. Tony is there witnessing for the children who cannot speak for themselves. Witnessing for the children who are at the mercy of a Godless society that cares not for them. We do have hope though.

Fr. Tony reminded us of what Our Blessed Mother said to St. Juan Diego at Guadalupe in 1531:

“Listen, my son, to what I tell you now: do not be troubled nor disturbed by anything; do not fear illness nor any other distressing occurrence, nor pain. Am I not your mother? Am I not life and health? Have I not placed you on my lap and made you my responsibility? Do you need anything else?” (Holy card, With Ecclesiastical Approval, Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey, Lafayette, Oregon)

Even though we don't always understand God's ways, and why the evil of abortion is allowed, God is in control. We entrust their tiny souls to Him as we pray and witness to end abortion. This is more precious than anything the pro-abortions have, as there is nothing precious about the slaughter of these holy innocents.

A prayer for health care professionals

Yesterday morning during prayer I was filled with gratitude for the men and women who refuse to participate in assisted suicide and abortion. They need our continual prayers and support.

God bless them all and keep them strong in their resolve to protect and defend the most vulnerable members of our society.

Then these words from actress Patricia Heaton:

"Bill O’Reilly once asked her why she speaks out on the life issue considering the blow back she’ll receive from her industry. “As a Christian, it will not be Barbra Streisand I’m standing in front of when I have to make an accounting of my life,” she told him."

Something the pro-abortions might want to think about. I know, I know, the pro-abortions don't believe in God. But what if Pascal's wager is right?

Living my life for God

Father Yves talked on Sunday about faith and quotes Sister Ann Shields who hosts a radio program Food For the Journey.

Sr. Ann says to pray to the Holy Spirit by saying:
"Holy Spirit show me where I am putting my interests over yours."

Father Yves says:
She believes there is a major disconnect in the lives of many Catholics: a separation between God’s word and its application to our personal/daily lives. Through teaching, stories and inspirational challenges, Sister Ann is able to reach listeners from North Africa on Catholic radio stations and as far away as China and Pakistan via the internet.

An author, Sister Ruth Burrows, from England, wrote this about faith:
“Faith is not a thing of the mind, it is not an intellectual certainty or a felt conviction of the heart. It is a sustained decision to take God with utter seriousness as the God of my life. It is to live out each hour in a practical, concrete affirmation that God is Father and he is “in heaven.” It is a decision to shift the center of our lives from ourselves to him, to forego self- interest and make his interests, his will, our sole concern …”

Holy Thursday

John 17:1-11

`Father, the hour has come: glorify your Son so that your Son may glorify you; and, through the power over all mankind that you have given him, let him give eternal life to all those you have entrusted to him. And eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work that you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with that glory I had with you before ever the world was.

I have made your name known to the men you took from the world to give me. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now at last they know that all you have given me comes indeed from you; for I have given them the teaching you gave to me, and they-have truly accepted this, that I came from you, and have believed that it was you who sent me. I pray for them; I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they belong to you: all I have is yours and all you have is mine, and in them I am glorified. I am not in the world any longer, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name, so that they may be one like us.'

Freedom of choice

This was in my Church Bulletin this morning. It discusses why the change was made in the Roman Missal from "for all" to "for the many".

"Another change in the Eucharistic Prayers, occur when during the consecration of the wine into the Blood of Christ, the priest prays: "...the Blood of the New Covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins".

This is a change for an important theological reason from "for all" that we are accustomed to hearing. Jesus Christ suffered and died on the Cross so that all humanity might be redeemed from the power of sin and death we brought on ourselves through Adam because of original sin. We all are redeemed because of our personal worthiness but we do not get a 'free pass' into heaven.

The choices we make in this life have eternal consequences and when we reject God's grace and refuse to repent of our sins, we separate ourselves from God. So, Jesus' suffering and death is not a guarantee that all will automatically be saved regardless of our choices but rather it provides the freedom for us to choose for or against God.

This change in the Eucharistic Prayers makes it clear that our freedom to choose for or against God matters and that Christ's death is not a guaranteed `free pass into heaven for all' because God respects our free will and our choices."
