Instead of paying off the debt Canada invests in Pride Season

Recall how the Carney Liberals are continuing their discrimination policy against pro-life students who are not eligible to receive the Canada Summer Jobs Program. These grants are around $5,000 each. A drop in the bucket of government largesse, yet still will not ever go to a pro-life student.

Fast forward to Pride Season. Yes Virginia, Canada has a Pride Season--the only country in the world to not just celebrate Pride, but to have a whole season dedicated to it. And it's not just Pride Season, it's turning on the taps of millions and millions of dollars in new spending towards all things Pride, never mind old spending.

Never mind that Canada's debt is now almost 3 trillion dollars (Looks like this ($3,000,000,000,000) and a current deficit of $66.9 billion.

Statement by Minister Rechie Valdez to Mark Canada’s Pride Season 2026

Pride Season is a celebration of the strength, diversity, and resilience of Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ communities. Pride events begin this week and continue through September, offering 2SLGBTQI+ people and their allies opportunities to connect in safer spaces and celebrate the strengths of our communities.

Federal government strengthens support to keep 2SLGBTQI+ communities safe this Pride Season

Through ongoing investments in the 2SLGBTQI+ sector, including $54.6 million over five years, with $10.9 million ongoing, the federal government is supporting organizations to strengthen communities and expand participation in Canada’s economy and society. This includes $7.5 million over five years, with $1.5 million ongoing, to help Pride festivals address rising security and insurance costs and continue providing safe and welcoming spaces for participants, volunteers, families, and visitors.

Mark Carney's government continues its discriminatory practice against pro-life students

Dear Mauricette Howlett,

You state that:

job activities respect reproductive rights, including the right to abortion, as a condition for receiving federal funding...All employers under the CSJ program are required to provide a safe and inclusive work environment that respects individual human rights as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. When applying for funding through the CSJ program, organizations must attest that any funding under the CSJ program will not be used to undermine or restrict the exercise of rights legally protected in Canada.

As we know, and have known for many years, there is no Charter right to abortion -- abortion is not legally protected in Canada.

This means that the young people who are prevented from accessing the summer jobs programs are being discriminated against because of their religious beliefs since it is faith based organizations and persons who are the ones not eligible for the grants because of their opposition to abortion. Even if there was a charter right to abortion, and there isn't, preventing someone from receiving the funding based on their deeply held religious beliefs would still be discrimination.

Canada supposedly prides itself in its freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief, opinion, speech, assembly and association. But only sometimes. And only when the government says so. This is wrong.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Patricia Maloney

Dear Patricia Maloney:

On behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, I am responding to your email, which the Office of the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Mark Carney, sent to her on April 22, 2026, as well as your follow-up email to Minister Hajdu of May 10, 2026. You wrote about the launch of Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) 2026 and the availability of 100,000 positions for young people.

In your emails, you specifically raised concerns about the 2018 policy which requires CSJ program applicants to attest that their core mandate and the job activities respect reproductive rights, including the right to abortion, as a condition for receiving federal funding. You indicated that this requirement could result in the exclusion of organizations with pro‑life beliefs and asked whether this policy would be discontinued under the current government. I appreciate your taking the time to write and convey your perspective on this matter.

The objective of CSJ is to create quality jobs for youth across Canada by providing them with valuable work experiences during the summer employment period so that they gain and develop skills and competencies.

All employers under the CSJ program are required to provide a safe and inclusive work environment that respects individual human rights as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. When applying for funding through the CSJ program, organizations must attest that any funding under the CSJ program will not be used to undermine or restrict the exercise of rights legally protected in Canada.

In addition, all CSJ applications are assessed against 15 eligibility criteria outlined in the CSJ Applicant Guide. The CSJ Articles of Agreement outline the obligations of applicants to ensure that all funded job opportunities take place in a safe, inclusive and healthy work environment free from harassment and discrimination.

Employers who are approved for CSJ funding sign agreements confirming that they have understood and will comply with the rules of the program. The Department conducts a range of monitoring activities to ensure that funding is used according to the terms of the program outlined in the agreement with each employer. The provision of false and misleading information or failure to comply with the Articles of Agreement may result in revocation of funding.

Each year, the Department makes modifications to improve CSJ based on the feedback received from participants and stakeholders and will continue to implement as many innovative changes as possible to improve program delivery and adapt it to address the evolving needs of youth and employers across the country.

I hope that this information is helpful in addressing your concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mark Carney,

Today you announced the summer jobs program grants:
https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html?utm_campaign=esdc-edsc-censv2-24-25&utm_medium=email&utm_source=news-from-the-government-of-canada&utm_content=news-product-260420-en-2pm
There are 100,000 jobs available.
Will your Liberal government now put an end to Justin Trudeau's discriminatory practice of excluding pro-life people from receiving these grants?
As a self-proclaimed practicing Catholic one would think that you would be happy to not exclude those who hold Christian beliefs that the child in the womb is as valuable as any other Canadian human being and that organizations who espouse pro-life beliefs are as worthy of taxpayer funded summer job opportunities as any other Canadian.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thank you.

Liberal MP talks through his hat

From Pete Baklinski of Campaign Life Coalition:

Liberal MP John-Paul Danko (Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas) let the cat out of the bag about one of the real targets of the anti-Christian Bill C-9 that passed third reading on Wednesday:

This is what Baklinski refers to:

Mr. Speaker, throughout this discussion this afternoon, I have been trying to understand what the Conservative objection to the combatting hate act actually is. The best I can tell is that they are asking for freedom from accountability, basically. In the bill, hate is defined as detestation or vilification. We have seen white nationalist rallies, public symbols of hate, the growth of white supremacist clubs, the diminishment of reproductive rights for women, anti-abortion hate, hate against women, hate against LGBTQ individuals, hate against trans individuals, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia—

Dear John-Paul Danko,

You talk about anti-abortion hate. There is no such thing. There is pro-choice hate however. We experience it every year at the March for Life. We also experience it every October during Life Chain where we are spat at, yelled at, given the finger to, and worse. Why don't you come out to one of these peaceful respectful pro-life events to see for yourself the hate we have to put up with?

You also speak about "the diminishment of reproductive rights for women, anti-abortion hate, hate against women, hate against LGBTQ individuals, hate against trans individuals". Can you please explain why you think this? Because you might want to look at your government's spending on these pro-abortion/LGBTQ issues. The billions spent by your Liberal government doesn't sound like diminishment to me--sounds more like growth at an exponential rate.

I can assure you that your government does not spend billions on pro-life issues. In fact your Liberal government spends exactly $0 on "anti-abortion". And thanks to your Liberal government, the few dollars we received in the past for the summer jobs program, was revoked. As well, Pro-life people are banned from your Liberal party.

Discriminating against pro-life people on such a massive scale as this, by your Liberal government, could rightly be called another kind of hatred. How about -- hatred of pro-life people by the government of Canada?

"hate is defined as detestation or vilification".

Hmmm...if the shoe fits.

Fighting MAID - Priests must speak out against euthanasia

With a little help from AI: which countries perform the most euthanasia per capita?

  • The jurisdictions with the highest rates of euthanasia or physician-assisted dying (MAID) per capita are Canada and the Netherlands. Specifically, the Canadian province of Quebec reports the highest regional rate globally.
As a percentage of total deaths:
    • Quebec, Canada: Accounted for 6.8% of total deaths in a recent reporting period (April 2022-March 2023). In 2023, MAID accounted for 4.7% of all deaths across Canada.
    • Netherlands: Euthanasia and assisted suicide cases make up approximately 4.8% to over 5% of all deaths.
    • Belgium: The rate is around 2.3% of all deaths.
    • Switzerland: Assisted suicide accounts for approximately 1.5% to 2.3% of all deaths.

From Priests for Life recent newsletter on what we Catholics and clergy need to do to counter the euthanasia lobby:

The euthanasia forces have a very clear program. Make killing not just available but make it socially acceptable, seen as a natural alternative and morally obligatory. Once a decision is made, it must not be discussed, but just accepted and lauded.
...

I would challenge anyone reading this newsletter to realize that we must embark on several things at the same time, difficult though they may be. Firstly, our people are being educated by their front pages and newsfeeds. They are being bombarded by the pro-euthanasia campaign. We also need an engaging campaign teaching why suicide and being killed by physicians is wrong. This must be a sustained campaign - not just for one week or year. It must reach Catholics and non-practicing Catholics.

Secondly, we must be very clear about fighting for the conscience rights of family members who are responsible for those who are weak and vulnerable. The conscience rights of our health care workers, the social necessity of protecting the weak and the vulnerable must be protected.

Thirdly, these are life and death situations. We need to educate our own priests and deacons to be leaders in this area and to militate for their own legal protections. The pro-death campaign is well on its way in our hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes. Is the pro-life campaign really up to responding?

Fr. Tom Lynch (PFLC National President)
Dying with Dignity obsessively lobbies the government. They receive millions in donations every year, yet they have the nerve to get funding from the Canada Summer jobs program, a program that pro-life organizations are ineligible to receive.

All of us, clergy included, need to speak out publicly against Canada's evil euthanasia regime.

Student Summer Jobs grants should be open to all Catholics

Dear Mark Carney,

I understand you are a Catholic. Well I have a question for you that is very important for all Catholics, and especially for student Catholics trying to get a job this summer. The Summer Jobs Program has increased the job grants this year by 6,000. This is great news.

While CSJ was on track to create 70,000 jobs for youth this summer, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, today announced up to 6,000 more Canada Summer Jobs opportunities. This will unlock new opportunities for Canadian youth and help our country build the strongest economy in the G7.

Since you are a practicing Catholic I'm sure you will agree with me that Catholic organizations who stand up for life issues, (because of course Catholics are pro-life) that you will change the criteria for the Summer Jobs Program to allow all Christian and Catholic groups to now be eligible for this program.

Can you please confirm for me that this will be the case?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from you real soon.

Sincerely,
Patricia Maloney

Mark Carney and pro-life Canadians

I sent this letter to Mark Carney six days ago. I haven't heard back from him.

Dear Mark Carney,

I have heard that you are a practicing Catholic.

So I was wondering. If you become Prime Minister, will you restore funding to pro-life groups for the summer Jobs program? Will you allow pro-life people to be Liberal MPs? Will you cease and desist the attacks on Pregnancy Care Centres that began with Justin Trudeau and Joyce Arthur? Basically, will you stop all discriminatory actions against pro-life people?

Pro-life people were not well treated under Justin Trudeau. As it appears you are set to win the Liberal leadership, and that an election will take place soon afterwards, it would be good to know how you would treat pro-life people should you win the election.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Sincerely,

Patricia Maloney

Canada continues to discriminate against pro-life students

Today Canada announced Canada Summer Jobs: 70,000 new job opportunities for youth on the way this summer

That's 70,000 new job opportunities but only if you support the killing of unborn children. You cannot:

'actively work to undermine or restrict a woman's access to sexual and reproductive health services.'

I would like to know how the employees of Women and Gender Equality and Youth feel about this discrimination, when they are forced to disqualify their fellow citizens from the program? Surely some of them are not pro-abortion. Do they protest this despicable treatment to their bosses, or even better, to Justin Trudeau? Or are they too scared to?

Joyce Arthur: lobbying, grants ($78,792) and brothels

It's common knowledge that Joyce Arthur advises the government on all things pro-abortion revealed through numerous ATIPs that I've done. (i.e. her lobbying to remove funding for summer jobs program for pro-life groups, her relentless attacks on Pregnancy Care Centres, which began with her $27,400 government grant to write a witch hunt of a report against pregnancy care centres, to name just two examples)

Here are a few other examples of her lobby efforts to government:

1) From this government document Family-centred maternity and newborn care: National guidelines, under a chapter on Loss and Grief, they actually refer to Arthur's Why women have abortions. The document is supposed to be about maternity and newborn care, and all of a sudden we're talking about why women have abortions. Why is the government referring to a pro-abortion document from Arthur when the government document is supposedly about family centred maternity and newborn care?

2) Joyce Arthur's 2021 election spending of $9,984.00. Most of the money went to salaries for her and her pro-abortion friends. More pro-abortion lobbying during an election.

3) Next we have Joyce Arthur advocating for four brothels at the 2010 Olympics. I am not kidding. Thankfully saner heads prevailed when the Conservative government said that it was
"not in the business of legalizing brothels"
and would not approve the initiative.

4) Joyce Arthur the lobbyist: From here you can see that she received funding of $11,000 in 2023 from SSHRC.

When I did an ATIP on this to Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), I was told that
"Joyce Arthur did not receive funds from SSHRC. Joyce Arthur was listed as a collaborator on a Partnership Engage Grant (PEG) and a Knowledge Synthesis Grant (KSG)".
But I was unable to find which grant she was collaborating on for this $11,000 amount. I'm waiting for a clarification from the ATIP office.

I did find three other SSHRC grants where Arthur was a collaborator or a partner. Notice that the first one is with Dying with Dignity the pro-death lobbying group.
1) Exploring the impact of belief-based denial of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) on those seeking services: A multi-methods qualitative study in Canada (emphasis added).
2) Exploring the impact of belief-based denial of contraceptive or abortion care on those seeking services: A multi-methods qualitative study in Canada (emphasis added)

The pro-deathers are getting government grant money to target belief based (read Christian) non-acceptance of killing children in the womb and old sick people. I can tell you why Christians don't believe in killing people in one short sentence. You don't need $50,000 to figure it out. Just ask us: Killing people is wrong, evil, unethical and immoral.

3) Abortion Attitudes and Access: Building A Canadian Framework for Reproductive Justice
What kind of stupidity is this? We have so much freaking 'reproductive justice' in this country with the pro-aborts already getting gazillions of dollars in government funding, plus fully funded free on-demand abortions, that now they just have to come up with new and ridiculous made-up reasons to get more tax-payer money to fund their pro-death ideology. Welcome to Canada.

ARCC lobbies government against pro-life charity

Joyce Arthur and her Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) are registered lobbyists. I wondered. What kind of lobbying are they doing?

So I submitted an ATIP to Employment and Social Development. What I found out was shocking but not surprising. It seems that ARCC is having big feelings--writing to two different ministers and the Prime Minister--that a pro-life organization received a paltry $3,362 in 2021 through the Canada Summer Jobs program (when I checked I saw that they actually received $3,383 in 2022).

Let's compare that to what another charity--the pro-abortion charity--Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights, received in 2022 in government funding: $3,003,355. That's 888 times as much as the pro-life charity received.

ARCC apparently didn't like that a pro-life charity received this miniscule grant. Because ARCC demanded of ESDC, that this charity:

  • Does not receive any Canada Summer Jobs funding this year
  • Is permanently disqualified from receiving CSJ funding in the future
  • Is required to repay the CSJ funding they received in 2021, due to violating program requirements as their mandate and primary activities are to oppose human rights including reproductive rights

I don't believe one needs to comment on these demands made by ARCC. Other than they are both ridiculous and petty.

The pro-life charity paid out a total of $3,455 in salaries for two part-time employees. That's a $1,727.50 salary per employee, which was covered by this itsy-bitsy, teeny-weenie grant the pro-life group received. For comparison purposes, Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights's total compensation paid to employees that year was $2,175,492, five of whom made between $80,000 and $119,999, and five of whom made between $120,000 and $159,999. The $3,003,355 received by Action Canada in government funding, would have more than covered these exorbitant salaries, with almost a million left over to use to promote their pro-abortion agenda.

Lobbying the government is one thing. But for a pro-abortion group to lobby the government against giving a pocket-change sized grant to a pro-life charity is pretty low even for a pro-abortion group.

All Canadians deserve to be respected

Dear Justin Trudeau,

I have a question for you Mr. Prime Minister and it is a sincere question that I would really like an answer to. I am concerned about the divisiveness of many of your policies towards many Canadians. Are you aware of how your policies affect the people you govern?

I first started to notice this nine years ago, before you even became Prime Minister. I wrote to you about your policy to exclude pro-life people from belonging to the Liberal party. https://run-with-life.blogspot.com/2014/10/open-letter-to-justin-trudeau-honouring.html. I was curious then, and still am, as to why you never responded to my letter? If I had supported this policy, would you have answered me?

As the years passed, it seemed to me that there were many Canadians whose values you didn't share. It felt like you wanted to punish them by enacting policies that disrespected and marginalized these people you didn't agree with, or that didn't agree with you.

You seem to have taken a particular dislike to pro-life people, and this continued when you denied them government funding for the Summer Jobs Program. And more recently, by threatening to remove the charitable status from pro-life organizations. You said that there were groups like pregnancy care centres who provide women with dishonest counseling. But you could never provide any evidence that this happens. Yet you gave out, and continue to give out, millions to the people who support and celebrate abortion.

Then there was the pandemic. If people chose not to get the shot, you called them names. You closed the churches but kept the abortion clinics open. People were really hurt by your policies; people went bankrupt; people lost their jobs; families were separated; mental health issues soared; people couldn't get medical treatment. You fired public servants who refused to get vaccinated. You wanted people to do what you wanted them to do. If they didn't, you called them names and punished them.

Currently, parents who are concerned about gender ideology being forced on them and their children, are called "far-right". There are millions of Canadians who do not agree with this ideology, yet we are forced to look at pride flags everywhere, for not just one day; not just one month; but now for an entire season. This makes no sense. While all Canadians deserve respect, why are we now being forced to "celebrate" an ideology that is against our sincerely held values and beliefs? Catholics and Muslims, and others, do not share this ideology. But it is being forced upon us everywhere we turn. I do not ask you to celebrate my Catholicism or my being pro-life. But you insist on me "celebrating" pride in all of its forms.

It seems you want all Canadians to agree with you on everything. But we don't. And we should not be forced to. We are also Canadians Prime Minister, and we deserve to be respected and treated with dignity.

I hope you will watch this video of Jordan Peterson's interview with Tamara Lich. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2wegzK35Z94Ls60uBBkNQr

Tamara is a Canadian hero. She headed a movement that brought all Canadians together. The trucker convoy was not divisive. People from coast to coast to coast supported it; of all ethnicities; of all faith backgrounds; from all walks of life; they came together and asked that you listen to them. Tamara said of the movement: "People were proud to be Canadian again." But you would not meet them. You would not listen to them. Instead you called them names, invoked the emergency act and froze their bank accounts. You wouldn't even talk to them. I heard you went to the Laurentians to ski when the emergency act was invoked, while Canadians were fighting for their livelihoods, yet you refused to listen to their concerns. You called people 'racist,' 'misogynistic,' and the unvaccinated were a “small fringe minority” with “unacceptable views.” The truckers kept Canada running during the pandemic. Yet you had no time for them, or their concerns.

Canadians have different values and different beliefs. I will respect your beliefs, but please respect mine, and please respect the beliefs of all the Canadians whose beliefs and values are different from yours. Please stop calling us names. Please stop penalizing us. Please stop marginalizing us. Please stop punishing us. Please respect us.

I ask you, I beg you, please stop being divisive.

Sincerely,

Patricia Maloney

Part 3 - pro-abortion author continues witch hunt

Previous post Part 2 - Pro-abortion report - uses US experience of PCCs

You know, it is very sad when people have so much ill will towards pregnancy care centres, that they relentlessly attack these centres for years on end. But that's not enough. They have also made repeated unwarranted complaints to CRA about them. Thankfully CRA has not acted on these complaints. Regardless, nobody should have to endure such frivolous, vexatious and unfounded accusations.

"As of December 2022, a total of 66 complaints have been made to the CRA by ARCC and allied groups, against 40 CPCs and 26 advocacy groups. None has had their charity status revoked due to the complaints. ARCC has also researched the wealthiest or most influential anti-choice groups in Canada and found that ten had an annual revenue of over $750,000 was in 2021, including seven CPCs or advocacy groups that run CPCs.

To give you some context to this myth that pro-life groups are "wealthy", the ten pro-life charities the pro-abortion author refers to, received a total of $365,028 in one year of government funding. On the other hand, the pro-abortion Action Canada for Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights, received a whopping $3,003,355 from government funding in one year. And that's for only one pro-abortion organization, not ten. I've written before about the billions the pro-abortions receive in government funding.

The pro-abortion author's next vexatious attack:

"When the pandemic arrived in 2020, the Liberal government launched the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program (CEWS) to give financial relief to employers so they could retain and pay their staff. A total of 53 anti-choice groups received CEWS funding, including 35 CPCs.

In fall 2020, ARCC submitted a petition with over 11,000 signatures asking the government to stop and rescind the funding, 200 and change the program’s criteria to match the Canada Summer Jobs new criteria. The government was non-responsive to the petition and all requests. The CEWS program ended in August 2021.

It seems that once again, CRA did not act on these frivolous, vexatious, unfounded and frankly, ridiculous complaints.

"Given the results of this study, we recommend that CPCs in Canada be regulated in order to better public health and respect the rights of patients seeking healthcare. We specifically recommend that CPCs: be required to disclose their anti-choice and religious stance be stopped from providing unregulated medical services such as ultrasounds, not be publicly funded be removed from referral lists used by legitimate medical facilities, have their charitable tax status revoked for those that are charities,be stopped from teaching sex education in public schools, and not be allowed to place misleading advertising in public."

It wasn't enough to complain to CRA over and over again, the pro-abortions want nothing less than to ensure that pregnancy care centres are unable at all to do the work they do so well.

Calling this a witch hunt is an understatement.

Pro-abortion group misinforms on abortion

I see that the pro-abortions are at it again. They are misinforming Canadians about pregnancy care centres. This disinformation campaign is so bad, that once again, Pregnancy Care Canada had to rebut these fabrications from this pro-abortion group.

(The full rebuttal is reprinted with permission below.)

It's all pretty ironic really. In case I need to remind you, Justin Trudeau wants to remove charitable status from pro-life groups because of his hatred of all things pro-life:

"Meanwhile, anti-choice organizations are actively working to spread misinformation about abortion, putting the health and safety of young people and vulnerable women at risk."

We all know that pro-life groups do no such thing. But here is a case of an organization who actually is spreading misinformation about abortion. And guess what? They received over $100,000 in government funding in the last two years alone.

So Justin Trudeau. Will you please cancel this funding? Now would be a good time.

Pregnancy Care Canada is a non-political, not-for-profit, faith-based, national best practice association for over 80 affiliated pregnancy care centres, at times referred to as crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs). Most but not all pregnancy care centres are affiliated with Pregnancy Care Canada. Our affiliated centres provide a safe environment for a woman to make a pregnancy decision that is fully informed, evidence-based, consistent with her belief system, and free from external pressure. Why a Rebuttal?

Normally, we have no interest in responding to false narratives from partisan groups. However, owing to the prominence of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, we feel compelled to respectfully respond to the shocking allegations in Abortion in Canada is legal for all but inaccessible for too many.

The authors are with an organization called missINFORMED, “a national non-profit designed to provide health education and to promote informed advocacy through evidence-based teachings.”[i]

Our rebuttal does not concern the authors’ stated opinions on abortion, abortion law, and abortion restrictions in Canada, the thrust of their piece. We are addressing the accusations specific to crisis pregnancy centres. We will repeat verbatim each of the eight fraudulent allegations, and respond.

The missINFORMED Allegations

  1. Compounding the issue of inequitable abortion access are unregulated crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs).[ii]

Pregnancy care centres are governed by a board of directors and operate in accordance with specified articles of incorporation, by-laws, and stated purpose. Centres adhere to all applicable Canada Revenue Agency and provincial regulations. This includes but is not limited to complying with the legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to financial management, employment, and public disclosure. Our affiliated centres which provide medical services retain healthcare professionals who work within their scope of practice and in accordance with provincial regulatory bodies. Our affiliated centres follow strict best practice guidelines, including adherence to published affiliation principles, counselling ethics, financial stewardship, and centre director accreditation. If any centre is found to be in non-compliance – i.e. unwilling or unable to meet our affiliation standards – such a centre will be removed from affiliation.

  1. CPCs are anti-choice wolves in sheep’s clothing. They are advertised as a resource for individuals with unplanned pregnancies to receive support and counselling.

Apart from the “wolves” indictment, this is the only accurate statement in the article. Yes, we advertise support for individuals with unexpected pregnancies. Specifically, information on all pregnancy options: parenting, adoption, and abortion. Further, depending on the unique services of a centre, also prenatal

instruction, parenting classes, financial aid, material support (e.g. maternity clothes, baby clothes, formula, diapers, furnishings), and post abortion care (e.g. individual, support groups, and retreats).

  1. However, they deceive clients with misinformation about abortion or other options that may delay or interfere with their ability to access the care they need.

Pregnancy care centres do not delay or interfere with client care access. Centre support is volitional, permission-based, and free of charge. Our affiliates have helped hundreds of thousands of women with onsite assistance and with community referrals for nearly 25 years. Our affiliates provide accurate information on all options at all stages of pregnancy.

To allege “misinformation” the authors inappropriately compare Canadian crisis pregnancy centres to various American centres in a US report: “[At] these centers, women do not receive comprehensive, accurate, evidence-based clinical information about all available options.”[iii] Leaving aside the validity of that particular report, Canadian centres are not American centres. We base our information on scientific literature and the expertise of healthcare and counselling professionals in Canada.

Our client booklet Pregnancy Options Guide has been reviewed by 80 specialized practitioners.

Why so many proofreaders?

First and foremost, for accuracy for our clients.

Second, to ensure the integrity of our information which is often challenged by organizations ideologically opposed to crisis pregnancy centres. Thus, as is noted on our Pregnancy Options Guide,

For accuracy and accountability, the Pregnancy Options Guide has been reviewed by 80 specialized practitioners in Canada, including perinatal nurses, family physicians, obstetricians-gynaecologists, medical ethicists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.

  1. CPCs far outnumber abortion care providers in Canada.

Not a significant point, but still inaccurate. In Canada, there are over 150 abortion facilities and an estimated 125 crisis pregnancy centres.[iv]

  1. Why are we, members of a pro-choice non-profit focused on evidence-based education, competing for funding with anti-choice groups such as the CPCs?

Pro-choice groups do not compete with CPCs for taxpayer funding. Pregnancy care centres rely on donations from individuals, families, businesses, churches, and private foundations.[v]

  1. We heard promises that were included in the Liberal platform in 2021 to prevent anti-choice groups and CPCs from being assigned charitable status, but we have yet to see these promises kept.

The Liberal platform promise is as follows: “A re-elected Liberal government will: No longer provide charity status to anti-abortion organizations (for example, Crisis Pregnancy Centres) that provide dishonest counseling to women about their rights and about the options available to them at all stages of the pregnancy.”[vi]

We agree. All crisis pregnancy centres – and/or prochoice organizations, and prolife agencies – which knowingly provide dishonest information should not retain their CRA charitable status. With respect, we have already communicated our position to the Members of Parliament mandated with the revocation investigation.

  1. One recommendation is not to limit who can obtain “charitable” status, but instead restrict what types of charities can receive donations and tax exemptions from a values-based perspective.

We could not disagree more. All charities operate from a values-based perspective. Whether secular or sacred, values are integral and universally recognized for ethical practices and service to others.

  1. Religious groups focused on charitable issues could still receive funding, but those imposingreligious beliefs on others would not.

Faith-based crisis pregnancy centres do not impose religion or sectarian beliefs. Registered charities legally cannot – and ethically must not – impose upon clients organizational or personal beliefs, whether religious, non-religious, ideological, or political.[vii]

Conclusion

The missINFORMED authors reiterate a tired script. Fall trap to confirmation bias. Make disrespectful, unsubstantiated claims.

For a woman to truly have a choice regarding her unexpected pregnancy, she must have authentic options to choose from – including the option to continue her pregnancy, receive support, and not feel pressured into an unwanted abortion. We trust the IRPP readership will see the validity and societal value of pregnancy care centres supporting vulnerable women, men, and families each day across Canada.

[iii] Using the ad hominem fallacy ‘guilt by association’ (i.e. here, having similar services) – is poor scholarship. For example, what about the “reports” of US abortion clinics misconduct? Using missINFORMED reasoning, by extension, then similar violations are occurring in Canadian abortion clinics. This of course is an injudicious leap. (Reported violations in US abortion clinics: unlicensed abortion providers; surgical instruments not sterilized; expired medications; unsanitary injection practices; failure to conduct pre-anesthesia evaluations; failing to provide follow-up care; emergency hospitalizations of women negligently injured; patient logs improperly filed and/or discovered offsite; financial fraud; failure to report reasonable suspected rape/abuse of minors; sexual assault of patients by staff; improper disposal of fetal remains. A number of these clinics have surrendered their licences. Some abortion provider staff have been jailed. [iv] The figure of approximately 125 pregnancy care centres includes 15 Birthright offices, which according to Birthright are not CPCs. The authors referenced an incorrect figure for pregnancy care centres from a prochoice group which double-counted various CPCs, over-counted existing Birthright offices by a third, and mistakenly added some prolife education groups. The 150-plus figure for abortion facilities includes abortion clinics, abortion-procuring hospitals, and Quebec CLSCs (centre local de services communautaires). This figure does not include family physicians and some primary care clinics which prescribe medical abortions. Sources: Figures culled from Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, Birthright International, Alliance Ressources Grossesse, and Pregnancy Care Canada.

[v] Possible minor exceptions that are unrelated to general operations: Some centres participate in the Canada Summer Jobs program. This federal program exists to help youth gain paid work experience prior to resuming studies in the fall. The funds are not for a participating business or charity per se, but go through the organization to the student. Further, a few centres may have received a past grant toward a unique client-care project.
