"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." Matthew 23:27–28 (ESV):
On the one hand, the Canadian government marked World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th. They announced $120.2 million for continued operations of the 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline:
On World Suicide Prevention Day, we renew our commitment to preventing suicide, to supporting people who may be struggling, and to creating spaces for open, compassionate conversations that can help save lives.
Every person deserves to know that they matter, that they are valued, and that support is available. The 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline provides a safe, bilingual, trauma-informed and culturally sensitive space for anyone seeking support for themselves or for someone they know. Since launching in November 2023, trained 9-8-8 responders have answered more than one million calls and text messages.
Earlier this year, I announced renewed support of up to $120.2 million over the next two years for the continued operations of 9-8-8. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure that people across Canada have access to suicide prevention support when they need it the most.
On the other hand, the Canadian government has the most permissive euthanasia (MAID) regime in the entire world.
We don't want you to kill yourself -- but we do want a doctor to kill you.
