410 livebirth abortions in Canada from 2018 to 2022

Statistics Canada continues to report live birth abortions. There were 410 of them from 2018 to 2022. Code is P96.4 Termination of pregnancy affecting fetus and newborn.

    Hi Patricia, I am a coder using ICD-10. I just wanted to let you know that P96.4 is used for medical abortions at or after 20 weeks gestation for both stillbirths and live births. If the baby is born alive, there is an additional code from the Z38 category to indicate a live birth.
    If the numbers you're looking are only based on the P96.4 code, then they are for all medical abortions done at or after 20 weeks gestation. Not specifically for live births. Unless you have more information, that I'm not aware of :).
    I just wanted to clarify.

      Hi Danielle, I've been told both by stats Canada and CIHI that this number is for live birth abortions only. When I've received numbers from CIHI, they actually separate out the stillbirth abortions from and live birth abortions. You can see these numbers elsewhere on my blog.       Danielle, looks like you are correct. See here from CIHI. P96.4 is used for both stillborn and livebirth.

      You can also see the huge discrepancy between Stats Canada and CIHI's stats on these abortions. CIHI reports a lot more live birth abortions than stats Canada. Neither CIHI nor Stats could explain the difference.

      - P96.4 'Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn' is captured as MRDx
      - Acute Inpatient is defined by analytical_inst_type_code = '1'
      Newborns from Termination of Pregnancy are defined by
      - entry_code = 'N'
      - P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn is captured as the MRDx, with Z38. - Liveborn infants according to place of
      birth, as diagnosis type (0)
      - Acute Inpatient is defined by analytical_inst_type_code = '1'
