There were 152 late-term abortions in Canada resulting in a livebirth.
All of these 1,053 were late-term abortions (20 weeks or greater gestation).
These numbers do not include late-term abortions from Quebec, so this number could be and probably is higher.
Definitions from CIHI:
Stillbirths from Termination of Pregnancy:
"P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus or newborn"Newborns from Termination of Pregnancy:
"P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn"Stillborn Abstracting:
"A stillborn is any intrauterine fetal demise or termination of pregnancy occurring at or after 20 completed weeks of gestation in which the fetus shows no signs of life. A liveborn resulting from a medical abortion prior to 20 weeks is considered pre-viable for the purposes of classification and an abstract is not created."You can read the full report from CIHI here.
Last time I blogged about livebirth abortions was for 2013/2014.
So are women actually terminating and purposefully not killing the baby beforehand so that they might hold him as he dies? That number seems mighty high. You would think that an abortionist would not want such a complication, and would take steps to avoid it.
ReplyDeleteWe don't know the reasons why the abortions result in live births. I don't believe that information is captured.
DeleteWhat do they mean under each chart where it says " In accordance with CIHI's privacy policy, cells with counts of 1 to 4 are suppressed. These are represented by N/R (Not reportable) in the table. Who are what are the counts 1 to 4..
ReplyDeleteIt simply means that if they put in the numbers for those two gestational ages, because the numbers are low, there is a danger of identifying the particular situation of the livebirth abortion. CIHI's privacy policy says that therefore, they don't show the exact numbers for the 25-28, or 29+ gestational age abortions.
DeleteSo what we know for these livebirth abortions is this. There were 16 for a gestational age of 17-20 weeks gestation and 128 for gestational age 21-24 weeks. That's at total of 144. Therefore, the remaining 8 abortions were for abortions performed between 25 and 29+ weeks gestational age.
This information would be worth writing in a medical or ethics journal. But please, to give it credibility, give references to where the data came from.
ReplyDeleteI received the date from the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI). I don't believe they published it on line. I asked them for the data and they sent it to me. I have asked for this data on previous years as well.

ReplyDeleteDo you know if all the live births are left to die or are they then treated as a baby and given proper medical care?
ReplyDeleteNo I don't. All I know is that the code for these late term abortions is "P96.4 Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn", and that they occur at 20 weeks or later gestation.
