Letter to Stephen Harper re: Planned Parenthood funding

Dear Mr. Harper,

In light of the fact that we have a federal election coming up, I have a question I would like you to answer for me.

Last week we learned that Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is selling aborted baby parts for profitPPFA is part of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).

As you know, IPPF received $6 million from Canada for the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health initiative.

I haven't heard you speak out against Planned Parenthood's recent activities in selling aborted baby parts. Your silence on the subject to date, suggests you support these illegal activities of Planned Parenthood.

Since the Harper government has funded IPPF in the past, and in light of these recent allegations of IPPF's activities, would you continue to support funding to IPPF?

Sincerely,
Patricia Maloney

  1. I have a question for you. It is clear you won't change your views on abortion, and there is likely no amount of evidence that would convince you that Planned Parenthood does not profit from the selling of fetal tissue. Fortunately, my question is not regarding the moral implications of abortion, nor the fiscal policies of Planned Parenthood. I simply want to know whether you would rather fetal tissue be thrown away as medical waste, or used in the research to help individuals and families suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's. I lost my grandmother to Parkinson's after watching her mentally deteriorate for a decade, so my answer to that question is fairly obvious. Given those two options, which would you prefer?

  2. I would prefer that the abortion not take place in the first place. Then there would be no need then to dispose of the dead dismembered child in such a gruesome manner.

  3. I would appreciate if you answered the actual question.

    1. KSJ's comment (which I inadvertantly deleted) was this:

"It is more likely that this type of defunding campaign will inhibit the progress of medical research that could help millions, as oppose to outright stopping abortions. In your lifetime you probably have, or will have, received medical treatment that relied on this type of scientific research. Will you refuse it? Would you walk into a care home for people like my grandmother and tell them to refuse it as well? Preferring abortions not happen is not an answer, they are happening regardless, this has to do with what happens afterwards."

      My reply:

If you had a loved one die, and you discovered that the hospital morgue had illegally sold some of the samples (for profit) taken from the autopsy for medical reserach, would that be also okay with you?

  5. Yes, that would be okay with me, I would rather something useful come of something tragic. My loved one would be dead, their tissue is useless to them at that point, but not to someone researching leukemia (my Aunt passed away from chronic leukemia a month before my grandmother died of Parkinson's). I would expect the people who stored and transported the tissue to have reimbursement for the use of their services and facilities. Planned Parenthood does not make a profit from selling fetal tissue, there have been numerous investigations at this point, all of which concluded that the money was not used for profit. This is explicitly stated in the unedited videos and is demonstrated in the edited videos by the low figures the spokeswoman states. I will no longer post here as it is clear you will continue to evade my original question. I do hope that you take the time to consider why research on fetal tissue is important and who will be affected if it is defunded. Also, I encourage you to donate to the Parkinson's Society of Canada or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.
